Flies & Lures

Flies and lures are somewhat the same, but you need different rod and reel combinations to use them. Flies will require a Fly rod due their delicate and lightweight nature. With a Fly, you can simulate a May Fly on the top of the water which would be very difficult to do with an actual May Fly. For lures, generally you will use a Spinning rod due to the nature of the bulk of the lure and that you will likley be reeling it in quickly or using a jerking motion to simulate a crayfish bouncing along the bottom.

Flies

Flies are very lightweight by design. The materials used to make a fly are extremely varied and can be feathers, thread, hair; really almost anything. Many Fly fisherman take up fly tying as a hobby and make their own flies with special equipment.

Flies are designed to simulate insects and nymphs mostly. Some flies will simulate a minnow. It would be hard to fish for trout with a very small insect or to use a spinning reel with a fly tied to the end of the line. This is the specialized nature of the fly as a bait. Lures

There are different types of lures:

  • Spinners
  • Spoons
  • Jigs
  • Plastic Worms
  • Hard Plastic Lures that simulate minnows or other aquatic life

This is where a basic and sturdy old tackle box will come in very handy. Every type of lure can be put in its own compartment and aid in keeping the hooks from becoming meshed together.
